- Inga Saffron calls the plans for the 47-story, $200 million SLS International building at Broad & Spruce “the most sophisticated design [Carl] Dranoff has ever commissioned.” Kohn Pedersen Fox, the prolific firm from New York, has envisioned a slender residential tower (149-room boutique hotel and 125 condominiums) that is both “refined and elegant.” In the past, Dranoff’s work on South Broad has seemed at times unsure of itself, she says, but SLS is lauded for its wisely considered placement—on its own garage-dominated podium, as well as its relationship with surrounding structures.
- Residents in West Philadelphia expressed their frustrations last night with School District officials, who they say have failed to provide specifics on the current state of proposals for the reuse of the shuttered Alexander Wilson Elementary School at 46th & Woodland, reports the Daily News. There was some speculation at last night’s community meeting that Penn might utilize the building for student housing, yet officials would only go as far in admitting that the University of the Sciences had made an offer. “I’m a little frustrated right now at how little power it seems that I have or little interest there might be in what the effect is going to be on me and my neighbors,” said one attendee.
- NewsWorks previews a cross-generational exhibition opening tonight at Chestnut Hill’s Graver’s Lane Gallery. “American Heroes and Innovators” showcases the illustrations of father and son Chris and Justin Hopkins, who see the collaboration really as two offerings united in theme: a presentation of the groundbreaking feats of a wide range of African-Americans, from the Tuskegee Airmen, to Philly’s own Questlove. The Hopkins’ exhibition will run for five weeks.
- The Office of Housing and Community Development promotes the fact that close to 30 agencies across the city are now providing free tax preparation services for families that make less than $52,000 and individuals making less that $20,000.
