- Axis Philly discusses the growing ambitions of Temple University, including: a new $190 million library building; still more on-campus housing; the realization of a nationally prominent football program (albeit at the expense of its other sports and clubs), perhaps with its own on-campus football stadium; and a vigorous marketing campaign (a $5 million increase for next year’s budget). The North Broad school is betting that a denser, state-of-the-art campus will continue to attract higher numbers of students each year.
- At Spruce Street & Columbus Boulevard, a 7-foot-high granite wall was recently removed to reveal the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which lists the names of the 646 local soldiers who perished in that fruitless conflict. The Daily News looks at the $500,000 effort underway to connect the memorial to the street.
- NewsWorks speaks with Sister Mary Scullion, the head of Project Home, which will open Jon Bon Jovi Soul homes in Fairmount this week, a 55-unit affordable apartment complex geared towards the increasingly younger demographic of the homeless community. This is “our first initiative to provide permanent supportive housing for youth that are homeless or are aging out of foster care with an emphasis on education and employment.”
- The Philadelphia Business Journal reports that by “nearly all indicators—new orders, shipments and employment”—the manufacturing sector of Greater Philadelphia’s economy continues to grow.
