- According to the Passyunk Post, the Broad Street Armory will be demolished. The developers for the hitherto planned reuse of the Broad Street Armory say the building is just in too bad a shape to justify the renovations. Instead, South Broad Street will see 50 apartments in its place, in a “modern building that would rise six floors to 79 feet.”
- Philly is fast becoming a mecca of comedy, reports the Inquirer. Comedian and Paoli-native Todd Glass caulks it up to the opening of Helium Comedy Club at 20th& Sansom in 2006, having by now establishing itself as a nationally respected venue. “From day one,” says Glass, “that club taught audiences how to behave – not heckle, but pay attention to comedians.”
- Philadelphia Real Estate Blog offers something of a silver lining of the controversial Actual Value Initiative: “A bigger tax break for buyers of new and renovated homes.” Noting that such real estate investments will still benefit from the City’s decade-long tax abatement, “house values in the affected neighborhoods [may be sustained] and possibly even [rise] in neighborhoods like Francisville and Old Kensington that are only now experiencing significant waves of new construction.”
- A few other blogs are talking about Philadelphia’s iteration of “Click That ‘hood,” a site that asks you to name the city’s supposed 155 neighborhoods. While it may be a tad nit-picky (I wouldn’t necessarily separate Germany Hill from Roxborough as a whole, for one), it’s good fun—and good training.
