On Thursday, May 23rd, the Hidden City Festival 2013 will throw open the doors to nine remarkable sites that have been animated by 10 ambitious contemporary artist projects.
We’ve scoured the city to find the most unusual sites with the most compelling histories. Each site has been transformed by an ambitious contemporary artist project, a work created specifically for that space. Creative director Lee Tusman has chosen projects that are a significant departure from those featured in the 2009 Festival. Rather than being meant for the eye alone, they seek to engage the visitor, to create a shared experience. Visitors are invited to participate–to be inducted into a secret fraternal order, to attend a community meeting, or to help knit a giant sweater.
The Hidden City Festival 2013 will be the largest showing to date in Philadelphia–and one of the largest in the country–of what’s been called “social practice art,” a burgeoning, grassroots movement that was recently spotlighted in the New York Times.

Day, weekend, and all-Festival passes are available and can be used at all sites during regular Festival hours: Thursday-Sunday noon-7PM. Thursdays are free. In addition to artist projects at the nine Festival sites, Hidden City will be offering related tours, lectures, and events during regular open hours. Evening and after-hours performances are ticketed separately and generally run $30 for non-members/$25 for members.
